OCCUPATIONAL ASSESSMENT SCREENING & VACCINATION AGAINST SPECIFIED INFECTIOUS DISEASES
NSW Health has revised the Occupational Assessment Screening & Vaccination Policy.
The Policy applies to all existing staff, all new recruits, students on clinical placement, volunteers, contracted
clinical staff, and people on work experience. The Policy describes the requirements for employers, staff and
other clinical personnel in relation to occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against specified
infectious diseases and aims to:
Assist employers to meet their occupational health and safety (OHS) obligations and
their duty of care to staff, clients and other users of health service premises; and
Advise staff of their rights and responsibilities in relation to these OHS and duty of
care requirements.

NATIONAL REGISTRATION AND ACCREDITATION
The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) has resolved to proceed towards National
registration and accreditation for 9 health professions, including physiotherapy. The 9 professions are:
Physiotherapy, Nursing, Medical Practitioners, Optometry, Pharmacy, Psychology, Osteopathy, Chiropractic and
Dentistry.
Several consultations have taken place between COAG Health Working Group and
stakeholders of health professional regulation. On 26 March 2008 COAG signed an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA)
for a National Registration and Accreditation Scheme for the Health Professions, which will commence on 1 July 2010.

PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY INSURANCE
REQUIREMENTS
New legislation now requires NSW health professionals, including
physiotherapists, to provide evidence of professional indemnity
insurance in order to be registered to practise. Professional
indemnity insurance details will need to be provided as part of the
information required for annual renewal of registration. If a
physiotherapist changes or ceases to hold professional indemnity
insurance they are required to notify the Board as soon as
possible.

ANNUAL RENEWAL
The Board removed 403 names from the Register at its
meeting of 21 January 2008 due to non-payment of the annual renewal
fee. The APA and all health funds will be notified of the
removal of those names.
